Get ready for a brand new segment here on More Than A Millennial, ‘Artist Spotlight’ is the chance to give you lovely readers a chance to discover new, upcoming must-see bands! We start our segment with HOMEFRONT, an Australian band ready to take over after the latest release of EP ‘Outgrown’ and their upcoming tour with the mighty Awaken I Am. We talk about new music, influences and the impact of social media!
More Than A Millennial: Firstly how did you all meet and what made you come up with HomeFront as the band name?
HomeFront: Nav and Pete first met while attempting to form a pop punk band but never locked in the right members and the project was shelved. However, they stayed in touch and added Damian on bass (who had gone to school with Nav) and Connor who was trialed shortly after. As for the name, there isn’t too much of a deep backstory behind it, it was a game Nav enjoyed playing growing up and it fit the style we were going for.
MTAM: January saw the release of debut EP ‘Outgrown’. How was the whole music journey from start to finish? What was the concept behind the writing process?
HF: We wanted to write with a more mature sound than we had previously exhibited with past releases, and approached the EP with a more collaborative writing process. It was gruelling but we gradually developed a record we were proud to call our debut EP.

MTAM: Who influences your style of music, is there a particular artist who inspires you all individually or as a group?
HF: The current direction of our sound is influenced by acts such as Bring Me The Horizon, Blessthefall, and Hands Like Houses, though we each have different tastes and personal influences which help to create a unique, identifiable Homefront sound.
MTAM: There are video visual snippets/hints across your Instagram, which has fans hyped that something new is to drop very soon. Can we get a sneak of what that could be?
HF: We wanted to take a different approach to our latest release and really set a precedent for our upcoming cycle which will begin with our new single ‘Sinner’ on July 20.

MTAM: For newcomers to your music, how would you describe your sound, and what songs are your favourites to recommend?
HF: We describe our sound as a dynamic combination of heavy guitars and catchy melodic vocal hooks. As for individual favourite tracks, I think we would each have different answers but my personal favourite song (Peter) is probably Faultlines, it was the first song where we experienced an audience scream back our lyrics at us, which was an incredible feeling.
MTAM: Awaken I Am recently announced a September tour of which you will be supporting, how did that come about and what are you most excited for during life on the road?
HF: We can’t wait to get back on the road with Awaken I Am and I The Mighty! We will be visiting some brand new cities and playing some new music which is always exciting. Jimmy heard a track off our EP and so they were keeping an eye on us, then we all met at a show and got chatting which ended up opening up a lot of opportunities for us.
MTAM: If you had to choose to listen to three songs for the rest of your life what would they be and why?
HF: I’m sure we would all have different answers, but mine (Peter’s) are: ⁃ Sidewinder (Stand Atlantic) ⁃ Top of The World (Greek Fire); and ⁃ Here Tonight (Oh Weatherly) But this list would change relatively frequently.

MTAM: The music scene is dominated by a variety of places for bands to showcase their music (Spotify, Youtube, Twitter, etc.), are social media platforms hindering artists or giving them an opportunity to reach out further to new fans?
HF: There are definitely pros and cons to the current state of the social media and its role in sharing music. However, the main benefit is that it allows independent artists more of a chance to put their music in front of a wider audience, and also presents that audience with an opportunity to interact with artists which opens an interesting discourse that hasn’t always been possible.
MTAM: You recently signed to Dead Youth Records, big congratulations! What's next on the cards for the band, and who would you love to collaborate or work with in the future?
HF: Since signing to Dead Youth Records we’ve been working closely with their team to develop our project as a whole and take us to the next level. We have a few exciting things in the works, but can’t show our hand just yet. As for collaborations, we have tossed a few names in the ring in terms of featured artists and acts we would love to work with, including some of our favourite bands, so hopefully those opportunities will materialise.
